This is an original antique copper engraved map with original hand coloring, published in 1823 as plate XXV of James Wyld's Geographia Sacra, or Scripture Atlas. The engraved title reads "CANAAN, after the Return of the Jews from Captivity when it was Divided into 3 Provinces JUDEA, SAMARIA & GALILEE." The title is engraved at the lower right of the map, above two scales, one of British statute miles and one of Sabbath days' journeys.

The three provinces named in the title are each carried in their own wash: Galilee in green at the top, Samaria in yellow across the middle, and Judea in pink at the bottom, with Peraea in yellow beyond the Jordan. The "GREAT SEA" fills the left side, Phoenicia, Lebanon and Damascus are lettered at the top, and Trachonitis and Mount Hermon to the northeast. Nazareth, Caesarea, Joppa, Jericho, Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Hebron and Gaza are marked, the Jordan runs south into the Dead Sea, and Idumea and Arabia are lettered at the foot of the sheet.

Below the lower border the credit J. Wyld del. is engraved at the left and G. Neele Sculp. at the right, with the imprint between them: "Publish'd by G. & W. B. Whittaker, 13, Ave Maria Lane, April 1823." The plate number is engraved as XXV. in the upper right.

The atlas was published by G. and W. B. Whittaker in London, and its engraved title page names Wyld as "of the Quarter Master General's Office, Horse Guards". James Wyld the elder (1790 to 1836) was a London geographer and map publisher.

Light uneven toning, browner toward the edges. Marked handling soiling along the bottom, right and top edges. Foxing over much of the margin. All four corners are present. Several larger brown marks. Pencil numeral in the upper margin.

This is an original antique map, not a modern reproduction. This item is sold unframed.
