This original antique lithograph, hand colored, comes from the Galleria Universale di Tutti i Popoli del Mondo (Venice, Giuseppe Antonelli, 1842). The upper image shows two couples. At left a man of the Zillertal in a green hat with pink feathers, red waistcoat, broad embroidered belt, black breeches and striped stockings stands beside a woman in a brown hat, blue dress and crossed bodice carrying a rake and a jug. At right a woman of the Unterinntal in a green hood, pink bodice and black skirt holds a wooden bowl, facing a man in a feathered green hat who smokes a pipe, his blue jacket slung over his shoulder. In the lower image a Lechtal woman in a tall black hat and black cloak with a yellow bodice holds a blue bag beside a man in a green hat, blue jacket and red waistcoat, smoking a pipe; at right a Gröden woman in a flowered yellow hat, red bodice and blue skirt holds a small basket of flowers, beside a man in a brown jacket and red waistcoat with a stick.

The top margin is lettered "Tav. 99", "IMP. AUSTRIACO" and "Tom IV". The captions read "Tirolesi di Zillerthal" (Tyroleans of the Zillertal), "Tirolesi di Unterinnthal" (Tyroleans of the Lower Inn valley), "Tirolesi di Lechthal" (Tyroleans of the Lechtal) and "Tirolesi di Gröden" (Tyroleans of Gröden).

In 1842 the Tyrol was a crown land of the Austrian Empire. The Zillertal, the Lower Inn valley and the Lechtal lie in today's Austrian Tyrol, while Gröden, Val Gardena in Italian, is now in South Tyrol in Italy. Each valley had its own variation of hat, bodice and stockings.

Eight figures in bright regional dress make this a cheerful choice for an Alpine collection or a ski lodge.

This is an original antique print, not a modern reproduction. This item is sold unframed.
