Antique Dutch architectural print of H. M. Tetar van Elven's monument to the theologian Abraham des Amorie van der Hoeven in the general cemetery at Utrecht, an uncolored lithograph from J. H. Leliman's album of 1865 to 1866.

The plate is captioned 'Monument ter nagedachtenis van A. des Amorie van der Hoeven, op de algemeene begraafplaats te Utrecht'. Like plate 8, it is a single finished view rather than a technical drawing: an obelisk rising from a small gabled, gothic-arched aedicule carrying inscribed panels, on a stepped stone plinth among tall spruce and broadleaf trees. A gentleman stands in contemplation to the left, and a small family group, a man in a top hat, a woman and a child, gathers at a neighboring grave to the right.

Beneath the image, the inscriptions from the plinth and the middle section are transcribed in two columns headed 'Opschriften op het voetstuk' and 'Opschriften op het middelstuk'. They record that Abraham des Amorie van der Hoeven was born on 22 February 1798 in Rotterdam, died on 29 July 1855 near Arnhem, and held a professorship in theology at the Seminarium der Remonstranten, with a biblical citation and a short epitaph on the virtue of freedom and love. This transcribed text is unusual within the album and gives the plate documentary value beyond its architecture.

The lithography is in the same warm sepia wash as plate 8, without printed color, the trees and sky rendered softly to set off the pale stone. This antique architectural lithograph comes from the third part of the 'Album van bouwkundige schetsen'. Jan Hendrik Leliman (1828 to 1910), an Amsterdam architect and a founder of the architects' society Architectura et Amicitia, edited the album, gathering in it his own designs and those of fellow Dutch architects. His credit runs lower left and the imprint of the lithographer S. Lankhout of The Hague lower right. Framed, it would suit a study or library, and will interest anyone connected with Utrecht, Rotterdam or the Remonstrant tradition.

The sheet is in fair to good condition for its age. A long tide line runs down the right side of the sheet, with foxing spots in the lower left corner, light toning and minor edge wear. Please see the images for further detail.

This is an original antique print, not a modern reproduction. This item is sold unframed.
