A tinted lithograph of the Tuileries Palace in Paris seen from the garden side, its long facade stretching across the whole width of the view. The central pavilion with its dome and flag stands at the center, flanked by lower wings and taller end pavilions with high slate roofs and chimneys. In front, the round basin of the garden lies beyond a wide gravel walk, framed by trees and statues on pedestals at either side.
Parisians stroll through the garden in the foreground: ladies in bonnets and full skirts, one with a parasol, gentlemen in top hats, a soldier or two, and children walking hand in hand with their mothers. Above, a large, pale sky with light clouds gives the palace an airy setting.
The Tuileries Palace was the main residence of the French monarchs and of Napoleon III, until it was burned during the Commune in 1871; its ruins were demolished in the 1880s, and only the gardens remain. The sheet is lettered "Paris" above and "CHÂTEAU DES TUILERIES, côté du Jardin" below, numbered 13. The view was drawn by J. Jacottet, with figures by A. Bayot, printed by Auguste Bry at 114 rue du Bac and published by Maison Martinet, rue Vivienne and rue de Rivoli.
The technique is lithography printed with a cream tint stone, with white highlights for the clouds, statues and dresses, and a ruled border around the image. The printed image is clean.
An elegant reminder of a palace that no longer stands, it would look lovely in a sitting room or a bedroom, in a pale gilt frame with a cream mat.
This is an original antique print, not a modern reproduction. This item is sold unframed.
