An original antique engraving, colored by hand, captioned "ALEXANDER Ist EMPEROR OF ALL THE RUSSIAS." Emperor Alexander I rides a chestnut horse with a white blaze, walking to the right, and holds out a telescope in his right hand. He wears a black bicorn with red and white plumes and gold tassels, a dark green coat with gold epaulettes and red cuffs, a pale blue sash, a striped waist sash, white breeches and black riding boots. His crimson saddlecloth is embroidered and edged with a gold fringe. At the left rises a round stone tower flying a yellow flag with a black double headed eagle, and at the right open country runs to distant trees and hills. The face is worked in stipple.

Just below the image the plate is signed "Canton, del. et sculp." The publication line reads "Published 18th of May 1815. by Richard Evans, Whites Row, Spitalfields." Alexander I reigned as Emperor of Russia from 1801 to 1825.

It belongs to The History of the Wars occasioned by the French Revolution by William Nicholson, LL.D., printed in London for Thomas Kelly of 17 Paternoster Row. Its title page promises biographical sketches of the public characters of Europe and carries the story through the Congress of Vienna, the escape from Elba, Waterloo and the exile to Saint Helena. The plates themselves name Richard Evans of Whites Row, Spitalfields, in their engraved publication lines.

The green coat, crimson saddlecloth and yellow flag make one of the more colorful plates from the book.

This is an original antique print, not a modern reproduction. This item is sold unframed.
