An original antique copper engraving with original hand color, circa 1720, published at Augsburg by Matthäus Seutter. The scroll cartouche at the lower center is lettered "Neu Inventiert. Genealogischer Stamm-Baum der Griechisch. Kaÿser welche theils zu Constantinopel theils zu Trapezunt residiret, desgleichen ein Stamm Baum der Türckischen Kaÿser bis auf den heüt zu tag regierenden Sultan", that is, a newly devised genealogical tree of the Greek emperors who resided partly at Constantinople and partly at Trebizond, together with a tree of the Turkish emperors down to the sultan reigning today.
The Ottoman tree rises the full height of the right half of the sheet, each sultan named in a small scroll with his dates and the branches ending in his children, the youngest born in 1709; the reigning sultan shown is Ahmed III. The tree of the Byzantine emperors of Constantinople and Trebizond spreads across the lower left, its scrolls topped with crowns. At its foot a crowned emperor in a jeweled robe reclines with a cross topped scepter, and on the right a figure in Ottoman dress sits with a raised sword and a shield bearing a crescent and stars, a tent and a tasseled standard behind him. A crescent stands above the cartouche.
At the upper left is an inset map of the Ottoman Empire, lettered "Imperium Turcicum per Europam Asiam et Africam se extendens et secundum Beglirbegatus s. Praefecturas accurate distinctum", the Turkish Empire extending through Europe, Asia and Africa, divided by its beylerbeyliks or provinces. It runs from the Adriatic and the Black Sea to the Caspian, the Persian Gulf and the Red Sea, with a trophy of arms above its title.
The cartouche ends "ins Kupfer gebracht u. verlegt von Matth. Seütter Kupferst. in Augspurg" (engraved and published by Matth. Seutter, copper engraver in Augsburg), and the lower margin is signed "Gottfrid Rogg delineav." as draftsman. Matthäus Seutter (1678 to 1756/57) and Gottfried Rogg (1669 to 1742) both worked in Augsburg. Ahmed III reigned until his deposition in 1730, and this state of the sheet shows him as the reigning sultan.
Light uneven toning, browner towards the edges. A few small foxing spots in the margin. Slight wear at the top left corner. Minor edge wear, shallow nicks along the left. Folding line as issued.
This is an original antique print, not a modern reproduction. This item is sold unframed.
