This original antique lithograph, hand colored, comes from the Galleria Universale di Tutti i Popoli del Mondo (Venice, Giuseppe Antonelli, 1842), and is printed in landscape format. It shows a domed stone building with pointed windows and a tall white minaret, surrounded by low buildings with red tiled roofs and chimneys, with tall dark cypresses behind. A dusty road runs past rough walls of stacked stone toward the buildings, where small figures in red cloaks stand in the shade of a portico. At the right a leaning pine with green and russet foliage rises beside a block wall and other trees, and hills show in the distance. In the foreground a group of men in red vests and white shirts gathers around a round stone well, one of them seated at its foot. The sky is left pale with a faint rose tint near the horizon, while the roofs, the foliage and the figures' red vests carry the strongest color in the scene.

The lettering reads "Tom IV" at the top left, "GRECIA" at the center and "Tav 156" at the top right, with the final 6 cut in reverse. The caption under the image reads "Tripolitzza" (Tripolitsa).

Tripolitsa, today Tripoli, is the chief town of Arcadia in the central Peloponnese. It was the Ottoman administrative center of the region until Greek forces took it in 1821 during the War of Independence.

The landscape format and warm reds make it a good piece for a wide space above a desk or sofa.
