An original copper engraved map, uncolored, of Cisalpine Gaul, the Po basin and the arc of the Alps from the Lemanus Lacus at Geneva round to Histria. The peoples are lettered across it, among them the Lepontii, Salassi, Insubres, Cenomani, Euganei, Carni, Boii, Lingones, Vagienni, Ingauni and Intemelii, with Venetia in the east. Mediolanum, Ticinum, Augusta Taurinorum, Placentia, Cremona, Bedriacum, Mantua, Verona, Patavium, Aquileia, Tergeste, Pola, Ravenna, Ariminum, Bononia and Genua are placed, the Via Æmilia is lettered along its course, and the Verbanus, Larius and Benacus lakes are drawn with the Padus Fl. and the Rubico Fl. Pisae, Luca and Florentia appear at the southern edge.

The cartouche at right reads La Gaule / Cisalpine / pour l'Histoire Romaine / de Rollin / par d'Anville / Géographe ord.re du Roi. The plate number Pl. 24 is engraved above the upper right corner of the neatline. Two scale bars below the cartouche read Milles Romains, évalués 755 ½ Toises and Lieues Françaises de 2500 Toises. Two lines along the foot explain the longitude: Longitude selon la valeur des Degrés dans l'hypothèse de la Terre Sphérique et qui est comptée du Méridien de Paris and Longitude vraie, et qui se conclut des Observations Astronomiques.

The plate belongs to the Atlas de Géographie Ancienne, published in Paris in 1818 by Ledoux et Tenré and printed by Didot le jeune to accompany the works of Charles Rollin (1661 to 1741), author of the Histoire ancienne and the Histoire romaine. Its maps were engraved after the originals of Jean-Baptiste Bourguignon d'Anville (1697 to 1782). In the signed foreword Ambroise Tardieu, géographe-graveur, states that the maps were copied with religious fidelity and that, charged with revising the proofs, he had only to correct negligences and faults of execution.

This is an original antique map, not a modern reproduction. This item is sold unframed.
