This is an original antique lithograph with hand coloring from the Galleria Universale di Tutti i Popoli del Mondo (Venice, Giuseppe Antonelli, 1842). The upper image shows three figures: a woman wrapped in a long gray hooded mantle over a dark skirt, hands folded; a woman in a white head cloth with wide flaps, a long dark coat over an embroidered red and yellow bodice, a beaded chain and a white kerchief in her hand; and a young man in a fur cap, a long dark coat with red edging and a yellow collar, a round red ornament at his waist and full breeches, with green bushes and grass around them. The lower image shows a long colonnaded building with a raised block on the roof topped by groups of horse statues, a broad flight of steps at the center and equestrian statues at its sides. Red pennants fly from masts in front, a brick building stands at the left, and people, riders and children cross the open square.
The top margin is lettered "Tav 78" at the left, "GERMANIA" in the center and "Tom IV" at the right. The caption under the upper image reads "Boemi della Slesia" (Bohemians of Silesia) and the caption under the lower image reads "Museo in Berlino" (museum in Berlin).
Silesia is a historic region now lying mostly in Poland, with smaller parts in the Czech Republic and Germany; in 1842 most of it belonged to Prussia, whose capital was Berlin.
The pairing of costume and architecture makes this a natural choice for a collection of Berlin views.
This is an original antique print, not a modern reproduction. This item is sold unframed.
