An original antique copper engraving, uncolored, published in 1769. The plate carries no engraved title; it is the view of Segigeck, the modern Sigacik, and the peninsula of Teos.
The view looks across a wide, sheltered bay from a rocky shore. Two three-masted ships are in the center of the bay, the one at the left under sail and the other with furled sails beside a rocky point. On the far shore a town stretches along the water below a hill crowned with a fortress, with a line of mountains rising behind. Rocky headlands covered with scrub enclose the bay on the left and right, and a low reef of rocks lies in the middle of the water. The foreground is a band of choppy sea, and a wide sky of streaked clouds fills the upper half of the sheet.
The lower left is lettered "Borra Arch. del.", for the architect Borra as draftsman, and the lower right names the engraver James Mason. Engraved vertically at the right edge is "Chap: I. Pl: 1."
This is Chapter I, Plate I of Ionian Antiquities, published with the permission of the Society of Dilettanti by R. Chandler, N. Revett and W. Pars, London, 1769. Teos was an Ionian Greek city on the Aegean coast of Turkey and the birthplace of the poet Anacreon.
The bottom edge is uneven in one place. Light uneven toning, browner towards the edges. Marked handling soiling along the bottom, left and right edges. Foxing over much of the margin.
This is an original antique print, not a modern reproduction. This item is sold unframed.
