This is an original antique copper engraved map with original hand coloring, published in 1823 as plate V of James Wyld's Geographia Sacra, or Scripture Atlas. The title, engraved in a flourished cartouche on a pink panel at the lower right, reads "JOURNEYINGS of the CHILDREN of ISRAEL, from Egypt, to the LAND of CANAAN."

The map runs from the Nile delta and Egypt on the left, washed in green, across the desert of Etham and Arabia to Canaan and the land east of the Jordan at the upper right. The Sea of Zuph or Red Sea and the Gulf of Elath enclose the Sinai peninsula, with Mount Horeb and Sinai drawn in hachure near its southern end. The route of the Israelites is drawn as a line from the delta past Pihahiroth and across the head of the sea, then south by Marah and the Wells of Elim to Rephidim and Sinai, and north through the wilderness of Paran to Kadesh, Mount Hor and Ezion gaber. The stations along it are marked with small squares and named, and a key under the scale of British Statute Miles reads "Route of the Israelites."

Under the lower left corner of the border is the credit "J. Wyld del.", under the lower right corner "G. Neele Sculp.", and centered between them the imprint "Publish'd by G. & W. B. Whittaker, 13, Ave Maria Lane, April 1823." The plate number "V." is engraved above the upper right corner of the border.

The map comes from Geographia Sacra, or Scripture Atlas, published in London in 1823 by G. and W. B. Whittaker, whose imprint runs along the lower margin. The engraved title page of the atlas names its author as Wyld "of the Quarter Master General's Office, Horse Guards". James Wyld the elder (1790 to 1836) was a London geographer and map publisher.

Light uneven toning, browner toward the edges. Marked handling soiling along all four edges. Foxing over much of the margin. All four corners are present. Several larger brown marks. Original center fold as issued.

This is an original antique map, not a modern reproduction. This item is sold unframed.
