An original antique engraving, colored by hand, captioned "HIS ROYAL HIGHNESS THE DUKE OF YORK." The Duke rides a gray horse stepping toward the left with one foreleg raised, and holds his saber out ahead of him in his right hand. He wears a black bicorne with a red and white plume, a scarlet coat with gold epaulettes and gold lace, a star on the breast, white breeches and black boots. The saddle cloth is blue edged in gold, with a crimson holster cover bearing the cipher GR. Low in the background a city skyline with spires and a large dome spreads across the horizon beyond a green plain.

Just below the image, left of center, is the signature "Canton del. et sculp." The publication line reads "Published 18th. of May 1815, by Richard Evans, Whites Row, Spitalfields." Frederick, Duke of York, the second son of George III, was commander in chief of the British Army.

The plate was issued for The History of the Wars occasioned by the French Revolution by William Nicholson, LL.D., printed in London for Thomas Kelly of 17 Paternoster Row. Its title page promises biographical sketches of the public characters of Europe, with an account of the Congress of Vienna, the escape from Elba, Waterloo and the exile to Saint Helena. The plates carry their own engraved publication line naming Richard Evans of Whites Row, Spitalfields, London.

The pale horse against the distant skyline gives a calm, well balanced picture for a study or hallway.

This is an original antique print, not a modern reproduction. This item is sold unframed.
