An original antique engraving, colored by hand, captioned "LIEU.T GENERAL THE MARQUIS OF ANGLESEA." The Marquis of Anglesey rides a gray horse stepping to the left with one foreleg raised, and holds a curved saber high over the horse's head. He is in hussar dress: a black fur busby with a red bag and plume, a blue jacket trimmed with fur and gold braid, a pink shoulder belt, white breeches with gold lace and black boots with spurs. A pouch bearing the crowned cipher GR hangs at his side, and his crimson saddlecloth is edged in yellow. Behind him green hills rise beyond a stretch of water at the left. The face is worked in stipple.
There is no engraver's signature on the plate. The publication line reads "London Pub. by Rich.d Evans, Whites Row, Spitalfields. Nov.r 1815." The caption spells Anglesey as engraved, "ANGLESEA". He commanded the British cavalry at Waterloo.
The plate was issued for The History of the Wars occasioned by the French Revolution by William Nicholson, LL.D., printed in London for Thomas Kelly of 17 Paternoster Row. The title page promises biographical sketches of the public characters of Europe, together with an account of the Congress of Vienna, the escape from Elba, Waterloo and the exile to Saint Helena, while the plates carry their own publication line naming Richard Evans of Whites Row, Spitalfields.
The raised saber and fur trimmed hussar dress make a dashing cavalry image.
This is an original antique print, not a modern reproduction. This item is sold unframed.
