An original antique lithograph, hand colored, from the Galleria Universale di Tutti i Popoli del Mondo (Venice, Giuseppe Antonelli, 1842). The upper image shows two men standing on bare ground. At left a man in a black plumed bicorne hat, long dark gray coat, waistcoat, knee breeches, black stockings and buckled shoes gestures with his right hand; he wears a white cravat and lace cuffs. At right a younger man in a bicorne trimmed with red, white and blue plumes wears a brown tailcoat, blue trousers and black boots, with a red, white and blue sash knotted at his waist and gloves in hand. The lower image shows a sculpted monument with a pale buff wash: a bearded man in a short tunic and striped hose reclines on a cushion with a helmet, a heavy chain collar with a pendant around his neck, on a plain rectangular base.
The lettering reads "Tom. IV" at upper left, "FRANCIA" in the center and "Tav. 24" at upper right. The upper captions read "Deputato degli Stati" (Deputy of the Estates) and "Membro della convenzione" (Member of the Convention). The base of the monument is lettered "STATUA DEL MARESCIALLO CHABOT" (Statue of Marshal Chabot), and the caption beneath reads "Migliore opera della scultura Francese" (Finest work of French sculpture).
The Estates General met at Versailles in 1789, and the National Convention governed France from 1792 to 1795; the red, white and blue sash and plumes were the marks of revolutionary office.
A good match for a library or study, or for a collection on the French Revolution.
This is an original antique print, not a modern reproduction. This item is sold unframed.
