An original antique engraving, colored by hand, captioned "BERNADOTTE CROWN PRINCE OF SWEEDEN." The caption spells Sweden as engraved. Bernadotte rides a dark gray horse that rears toward the left, and he raises a curved saber in his right hand. He wears a black bicorne trimmed with white feathers and a red plume, a green coat with red collar and cuffs and gold epaulettes, a pink sash across the chest with a star and cross on the breast, and blue trousers. His saddle cloth is crimson with a gold fringe. The ground is a grassy bank with low hills in the distance at the left.

Below the image at the lower right is the engraver's signature "Romney. scu." The publication line reads "London, Published by Richd. Evans, Whites Row, Spitalfields, 1816." (its opening letters of Spitalfields are lost at a small marginal loss), and at the lower right is the page reference "Page 437." Bernadotte, formerly one of Napoleon's marshals, was chosen crown prince of Sweden in 1810 and later reigned as Charles XIV John.

The plate was issued for The History of the Wars occasioned by the French Revolution by William Nicholson, LL.D., printed in London for Thomas Kelly of 17 Paternoster Row. Its title page promises biographical sketches of the public characters of Europe, with an account of the Congress of Vienna, the escape from Elba, Waterloo and the exile to Saint Helena. The plates carry their own engraved publication line naming Richard Evans of Whites Row, Spitalfields, London.

The rearing dark horse against the pale paper makes a bold image for a hallway or study.
