An original antique engraving, colored by hand, captioned "LIEUT. GENL. SIR EIRE COOTE K.B. K.C.&M.P." The caption spells the forename as engraved; the usual spelling is Eyre Coote. He rides a dapple gray horse that rears on its hind legs toward the left, and he holds his saber out level ahead of him. He wears a black bicorne with a red and white plume, a scarlet coat with dark blue facings, gold epaulettes and gold lace, an order star on the breast and a crimson waist sash, with white breeches and black riding boots. The saddle cloth is yellow. Behind him lies a plain with rows of white tents of an army camp before a range of blue mountains, and the foreground is a grassy bank.

Below the image at the lower right is the engraver's signature "Romney. scu." The publication line reads "London Published by R. Evans, Whites Row Spitalfields, 1816."

The plate was issued for The History of the Wars occasioned by the French Revolution by William Nicholson, LL.D., printed in London for Thomas Kelly of 17 Paternoster Row. Its title page promises biographical sketches of the public characters of Europe, with an account of the Congress of Vienna, the escape from Elba, Waterloo and the exile to Saint Helena. The plates carry their own engraved publication line naming Richard Evans of Whites Row, Spitalfields, London.

The rearing horse and the camp of white tents make a lively military picture for a hallway or study.

This is an original antique print, not a modern reproduction. This item is sold unframed.
