The Bank of the United States in Philadelphia, an original antique steel engraving, uncolored, circa 1840. The caption below the image reads "THE UNITED STATES BANK, PHILADELPHIA."
The bank fills most of the plate, a temple front of eight fluted Doric columns under a wide pediment, raised on a high podium with a broad flight of steps on which two men stand talking. A low wall runs along the street in front, with an ornamental iron gate and a street lamp at the left and another lamp at the right. A leafy tree stands at the left and a plain brick house at the far right. In the foreground the street is busy: a man walks with a dog, a couple strolls, a man sits on a large basket, women carry baskets and a boy pushes a wheelbarrow.
The plate is lettered "W. H. Bartlett." at lower left and "J. Tingle." at lower right, with the number "104" below the center of the image. This sheet carries the English caption only and no publisher's imprint.
The sheet comes from a dealer's album rather than from a bound set. The plate belongs to the engraved views of North America after drawings by William Henry Bartlett, issued as American Scenery and published by George Virtue at 26 Ivy Lane, London. The building was designed by William Strickland for the Second Bank of the United States and completed in 1824.
Even age toning. Small light flecks in the printed area, to be checked by eye. Slight wear at the bottom right and top left corners.
This is an original antique print, not a modern reproduction. This item is sold unframed.
