This is an original antique lithograph with hand coloring from the Galleria Universale di Tutti i Popoli del Mondo (Venice, Giuseppe Antonelli, 1842), a single landscape format view. It shows the interior of a church under a low stone vault, its right side formed by rough rock in tones of orange and brown. Across the back runs a white screen with gilt arches, pink panels and two small painted icons, with a crucifix above and hanging lamps in front; a second arched screen appears through an opening at the right. A barred window is set into the plain stone wall at the left. In the foreground a figure in a red cap and long blue robe leans on a staff, two men in conversation stand near the center, and at the right a figure in a long crimson robe and tall cap gestures with an open hand.

The lettering runs up the right margin: "Tom IV", "GRECIA" and "Tav. 150". The caption under the image reads "Chiesa dell' Apocalisse a Patmos" (Church of the Apocalypse at Patmos).

Patmos is a small island in the Dodecanese. The Book of Revelation, also called the Apocalypse, states that its author John was on Patmos when he received his visions, and Christian tradition places that event in a cave on the island.

The horizontal format sets this plate apart from the upright costume sheets of the volume and suits a wide frame.

This is an original antique print, not a modern reproduction. This item is sold unframed.
