This is a view of Saint Mark's Square in Venice, an original antique steel engraving, uncolored, circa 1850. The sheet is captioned in three languages: SZ. MÁRK' PIACZA Velenczében. in Hungarian at the left, PLACE DE St-MARC À VENISE. in French at the center and St MARKUSPLATZ in Venedig. in German at the right, all meaning Saint Mark's Square in Venice.
The square is seen lengthwise, the long arcaded fronts of the Procuratie running down both sides toward the domes and pointed arches of the basilica at the far end. The tall campanile stands at the right of center, with the clock tower at the end of the left hand range. Washing or awnings hang from the arcades at the left, and the pavement is busy with small figures in cloaks and hats, with a dog trotting among them.
No artist, engraver or publisher is named on the sheet. The roman numeral I is engraved at the top right.
The sheet comes from a dealer's album rather than from a bound set. The captions in Hungarian, French and German are the only indication of its source, and the sheet names no publisher.
Loss or wear at the bottom left, top left and top right corners. A deeper irregularity along the left edge. Even age toning. A few small foxing spots in the margin. Small light flecks in the printed area, to be checked by eye.
This is an original antique print, not a modern reproduction. This item is sold unframed.
