An original antique engraving, colored by hand, captioned "THE PRINCE OF SAXE COBOURG." The prince rides a gray horse walking to the right, bareheaded with dark curly hair and side whiskers, holding his black bicorn down at his side. He wears a red coat with gold epaulettes and gold buttons, a breast star, a pink waist sash, buff breeches and black riding boots with gilt spurs. The saddlecloth is blue, bordered in pink and gold, with a fur holster cover in front, and the bridle and reins are pink with a blue rosette. Behind him lies quiet open country with trees, a pink house, a fence and fields. The face is worked in stipple.
There is no engraver's signature on the plate. The publication line reads "London Published by Rich.d Evans, Whites Row, Spitalfields, 1816." and "Page 575." is engraved at the lower right. The caption spells Coburg as engraved, "COBOURG". Prince Leopold of Saxe Coburg later became the first King of the Belgians.
The plate was issued for The History of the Wars occasioned by the French Revolution by William Nicholson, LL.D., printed in London for Thomas Kelly of 17 Paternoster Row. The title page promises biographical sketches of the public characters of Europe, together with an account of the Congress of Vienna, the escape from Elba, Waterloo and the exile to Saint Helena, while the plates carry their own publication line naming Richard Evans of Whites Row, Spitalfields.
The peaceful landscape and pastel saddlecloth give this portrait a gentler mood than the battle plates.
This is an original antique print, not a modern reproduction. This item is sold unframed.
