This is an original antique steel engraving, uncolored, lettered below the view "INTERIOR OF THE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, SAVANNAH." The interior is drawn as a great shallow dome, coffered in rows of panels around a central rosette, carried on tall fluted columns with Corinthian capitals. Galleries run round the sides under arched windows, and at the far end an organ stands in the gallery above a paneled screen and doors. Enclosed box pews fill the floor on either side of a center aisle paved in a pattern of octagonal tiles. A woman sweeps at the left and a man walks up the aisle.

The uncaptioned emblem above the view shows a train crossing an arched viaduct, with men and a horse at work before it. Below at left, a vignette lettered "OGLETHORPE PRESENTING THE INDIAN CHIEFS TO GEORGE 2ND 1733." shows Native American leaders in feathered dress and cloaks received before a seated king and courtiers. At right, "WESLEY PREACHING IN GEORGIA 1736." shows a preacher standing on a tree stump with raised arm before a seated group. Under the lower left corner of the view is lettered "Drawn by W. Goodacre Jun.r N.Y." and under the right "Engraved & Printed by Fenner Sears & Co." The number 73 is engraved at the top right of the frame. The imprint at the foot reads "J. & F. TALLIS, LONDON & NEW YORK."

It was issued in Hinton's History of the United States of America, edited by John Howard Hinton (1791 to 1873), the English Baptist minister and author, and published by J. and F. Tallis about 1850. The Tallis firm, London publishers of illustrated works sold in parts around the middle of the nineteenth century, set each central steel engraved view of this edition inside an engraved ornamental border carrying small lettered vignettes of episodes from American history. The view was engraved and printed by the London engravers and printers Fenner, Sears and Co. James Oglethorpe founded the colony of Georgia in 1733.

A fine choice for a collection of Georgia views or of architectural interiors.
