This is an original antique chromolithograph, printed in blue, green, rust red, buff and cream, showing an oval enameled faience dish seen slightly from above, casting a shadow on the sheet. The oval well in the center is glazed in mottled blue, brown and ocher radiating from a dark core. Around it, bands of beaded blue strapwork interlace into roundels and cartouches filled with acanthus leaves, rosettes, scrolls and red and white fan motifs on a cream ground, and the rim is edged in deep blue.

The running head reads "LE MOYEN-ÂGE ET LA RENAISSANCE." at the left and "FAIENCE Pl. XII." at the right. Below the image are the credits "H. Soltau del.", "Chromolith. Lemercier." and "Kellerhoven lith.". The caption reads "PLAT EN FAIENCE ÉMAILLEE, exécuté par Bernard de Palissy." and "Collection de M. Sauvageot à Paris." (dish of enameled faience made by Bernard de Palissy, collection of Mr. Sauvageot, Paris), followed by "F. Séré direxit."

Le Moyen Âge et la Renaissance was edited by Paul Lacroix, who also wrote as the Bibliophile Jacob, with Ferdinand Séré directing the illustrations, and was published in Paris in five volumes between 1848 and 1851. Its chapters, written by a range of specialists, survey the arts, crafts, sciences and customs of Europe from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance, and its plates reproduce objects, manuscripts and buildings in public and private collections of the day. This plate comes from the fourth volume, of 1851, where it accompanies the section headed "Faïence" (faience). Bernard Palissy was the French potter of the sixteenth century known for his glazed earthenware.

The plate can be framed on its own or hung with other plates from the work.

This is an original antique print, not a modern reproduction. This item is sold unframed.
