This is an original antique chromolithograph, printed in color, showing an enameled faience dish face on with its profile drawn below. In the center a group of putti gather around a reclining child among bunches of grapes, one holding out a shallow bowl while the reclining child raises a dish of grapes over a basket, with a brown animal lying in the foreground, an overturned urn pouring water at the left and an arch, trees and a pointed tower behind. The broad rim alternates long blue gray lobes with orange panels marked with chevrons, on a mottled green and buff ground. The profile shows the shallow well, the lobed rim and the foot.
The running head reads "LE MOYEN AGE ET LA RENAISSANCE." at the left and "FAÏENCES." at the right. Beneath the dish is the note "Moitié grandeur de l'original." (half the size of the original). Below the image are the credits "A. Rivaud del.", "Chromolith. Lemercier, rue de Seine 57, Paris." and "Kellerhoven lith.". The caption reads "PLAT EN FAÏENCE ÉMAILLÉE, exécuté par Bernard Palissy." and "Collection de Mr Ledicte-Duflos à Clermont (Oise.)" (dish of enameled faience made by Bernard Palissy, collection of Mr. Ledicte-Duflos, Clermont, Oise).
Le Moyen Âge et la Renaissance was edited by Paul Lacroix, who also wrote as the Bibliophile Jacob, with Ferdinand Séré directing the illustrations, and was published in Paris in five volumes between 1848 and 1851. Its chapters, written by a range of specialists, survey the arts, crafts, sciences and customs of Europe from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance, and its plates reproduce objects, manuscripts and buildings in public and private collections of the day. This plate comes from the fourth volume, of 1851, where it accompanies the section headed "Faïences" (faience). Bernard Palissy was the French potter of the sixteenth century known for his glazed earthenware.
The plate can be framed on its own or hung with other plates from the work.
This is an original antique print, not a modern reproduction. This item is sold unframed.
