This is an original antique chromolithograph, printed in color, from 1896. The caption printed beneath the image reads "ORTHOPTERA."
Four winged insects are spread on a mottled gray ground. At the upper right a green insect has forewings shaped and veined like leaves, with pale pink hindwings and red spots below them. Across the upper left a long slender brown insect with banded legs and long antennae opens a pair of fan shaped wings in dark brown with orange bands and a row of pale blue spots. Below it a long thin green insect spreads broad rose pink wings edged in green. At the lower right a brown insect with spiny front legs opens cream and yellow wings, each forewing marked with a green eye spot.
The plate is signed in the image at the lower left by F. W. Frohawk. No plate number or printer's line appears on the sheet.
The plate comes from The Royal Natural History, a popular illustrated natural history in six volumes edited by the zoologist Richard Lydekker and published in London by Frederick Warne and Co. in 1893 to 1896. The title page that accompanies these plates is dated 1896, which is the date given for this sheet.
Light uneven toning, browner towards the edges. Marked handling soiling along the bottom, right and top edges. Scattered light foxing in the margin. All four corners are present.
This is an original antique plate, not a modern reproduction. This item is sold unframed.
