Mount Tabor in Galilee, an original antique steel engraving, uncolored, circa 1850. The caption below the image reads DER BERG TABOR, that is, Mount Tabor.

The rounded mass of the mountain rises at the center of the plate above a broad plain, with lower hills and a sharp peak on the horizon to the right and a sky of drifting clouds. A track leads from the foreground into the view between rocks and trees. On it a robed figure walks away from the viewer, and further on a rider on a camel with a man on foot beside it, and another figure beyond, cross the open ground beside a group of tall trees. A group of figures rests on the grass among rocks at the lower left, and a wood spreads across the plain to the right.

The engraver's credit just below the image at lower right reads F. Grünewald sc. (engraved by F. Grünewald). The imprint at lower left reads Aus d. Kunstanstalt d. Bibliogr. Instituts in Hildbh. (from the art works of the Bibliographisches Institut in Hildburghausen), and at lower right Eigenthum d. Verleger. (property of the publishers).

The sheet comes from a dealer's album rather than from a bound set. Meyer's Universum was a serial collection of engraved views with descriptive text, published by Joseph Meyer's Bibliographisches Institut at Hildburghausen from 1833, its plates engraved on steel. Mount Tabor rises alone from the plain of Jezreel and has been identified by Christian tradition as the mountain of the Transfiguration.

Even age toning. Slight wear at the bottom right corner.

This is an original antique print, not a modern reproduction. This item is sold unframed.
