An original antique steel engraving, uncolored, of two buildings of Jerusalem, captioned "ÉGLISE DU SAINT-SÉPULCRE" and "MOSQUÉE D'OMAR". The upper vignette shows the courtyard before the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, with its pair of arched doorways and arched windows above, a heavy bell tower on the left and tall houses closing in on the right. A man leans on a stone base in the foreground, a group of robed figures stands talking on the right, and others sit by the doors. The lower vignette shows a square, flat roofed building under a great dome topped by a crescent, the shrine known in the West as the Mosque of Omar and today as the Dome of the Rock, with a smaller domed arcaded structure in front, a paved court with figures, and a tall tree on the left.

The captions translate as Church of the Holy Sepulchre and Mosque of Omar. The publisher's line at the foot reads "Publié par Furne, à Paris" (Published by Furne, in Paris), and in small letters at the lower right corner of the lower image the printer's line reads "Imp. Delamain, 8, r. Git-le-Cœur, Paris." No artist or engraver is named.

The plate comes from Voyage en Asie et en Afrique by MM. Eyriès and Alfred Jacobs, published in Paris by Furne et Cie, éditeurs, of 45 rue Saint-André-des-Arts, with a title page dated M DCCC LIX (1859). The volume belongs to the Histoire générale des voyages, issued under the names of Dumont d'Urville, d'Orbigny, Eyriès and A. Jacobs, a French collection of travel accounts illustrated with steel engravings and captioned in French.

Two of the best known buildings of Jerusalem on one sheet make this a natural choice for a collection on the Holy Land.

This is an original antique print, not a modern reproduction. This item is sold unframed.
