This is an original antique chromolithograph, printed in warm oak browns with blue iron fittings, lettered "A. MEUBLE HOLLANDAIS (XVIe Siècle) Collection de M. Kremer, à Anvers. B. PORTES D'UNE CREDENCE. Collection de M. Sauvageot, à Paris." At the top, lettered A, is a two stage carved cupboard. Its frieze is carved with masks and running animals, the upper stage has three panels of stepped moldings each enclosing a small figure, and carved figures stand between them as supports. The two lower doors repeat the stepped moldings around musicians, one with a lute. Below, lettered B, are two doors of a credence, carved in openwork scrolls with blue iron strap hinges and lock plates, one with a helmeted crest and shield and the other with a lozenge shield divided between scallop shells and a lion, beneath a monogram.

The running head reads "LE MOYEN AGE ET LA RENAISSANCE." and "AMEUBLEMENT CIVIL." (domestic furniture). The credits are "H. Soltau del.", "Chromolith. Lemercier" and "Ch. Walter lith."; this sheet carries no direxit line. In English the caption reads: A. Dutch cabinet (sixteenth century), collection of Mr. Kremer, Antwerp. B. Doors of a credence, collection of Mr. Sauvageot, Paris.

Le Moyen Âge et la Renaissance was edited by Paul Lacroix, who also wrote as the Bibliophile Jacob, with Ferdinand Séré directing the illustrations, and it was published in Paris in five volumes between 1848 and 1851. The work surveys the manners, customs, trade, industry, sciences and arts of Europe from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance, and its chapters were illustrated with plates after objects in museums, churches and private collections of the day. This plate belongs to the fourth volume, issued in 1851.

The plate can be framed on its own or hung in a small group with other plates from the work.

This is an original antique print, not a modern reproduction. This item is sold unframed.
