An original antique lithograph, hand colored, from the Galleria Universale di Tutti i Popoli del Mondo (Venice, Giuseppe Antonelli, 1842). The upper image shows four figures in a landscape of meadows and fir woods: a woman in a tall fur cap, yellow kerchief, pink bodice and long white apron; a mustached man in a green hat with a feather, an orange coat and white stockings, resting his hands on a musket; a woman in a broad black hat with long ribbons, pink striped bodice and blue apron with a basket of yarn on her arm; and a man in a blue frock coat, wide black hat and yellow breeches with a pipe. The lower image shows a barefoot woman in a blue knitted cap and striped bodice with a wicker flask, a hunter with a pipe, feathered hat and gun on his shoulder pointing into the distance, a young woman in a small hat with a sprig and red bodice carrying a bundle, and a young man in a long blue coat and pink waistcoat with a stick over his shoulder.
The top margin is lettered "Tom: IV", "GERMANIA" and "Tav. 69". Under the upper image: "Abitanti dell' alta Baviera. Abit della Baviera Renana" (Inhabitants of Upper Bavaria. Inhabitants of Rhenish Bavaria). Under the lower image: "Montanari Bavaresi. Abitanti del territorio di Monaco" (Bavarian mountain people. Inhabitants of the Munich district).
Rhenish Bavaria was the Palatinate on the left bank of the Rhine, then part of the Kingdom of Bavaria though separate from its main territory. Monaco is the Italian name for Munich, the Bavarian capital.
A colorful costume plate for anyone with Bavarian roots or a taste for Alpine folk dress.
This is an original antique print, not a modern reproduction. This item is sold unframed.
