This is an original antique lithograph, hand colored, from the Galleria Universale di Tutti i Popoli del Mondo (Venice, Giuseppe Antonelli, 1842). The upper image shows four townswomen on a paved street, with a small profile study of a woman's head in a spotted cap above them. From the left: a woman in a yellow and white winged cap, pink patterned shawl and green skirt with a white bag; a woman in a tall white lace cap with a red kerchief, a dark gown and a yellow apron, a basket on her arm; a woman in a yellow cap, pink bodice, white sleeves and green apron with a pink bag; and a girl in a large black bow headdress, a brown dress with a white collar and a blue apron, carrying a basket. The lower image shows two couples. At the left a woman of Baden in a broad black hat with ribbons, dark jacket and pink striped apron holds a rosary, beside a man in a black hat, long green coat and red waistcoat with a staff. At the right a couple of Württemberg hold hands, she in a dark cap, brown jacket, checked kerchief and white apron, he in a tricorn, long gray coat, red waistcoat and buff breeches.

The plate is lettered "Tom. IV" at the upper left, "GERMANIA" in the center and "Tav. 71" at the upper right. The captions read "Costume bavarese nelle città" (Bavarian costume in the towns), "Abitanti di Baden" (inhabitants of Baden) and "Abit: di Wirtemberg" (inhabitants of Württemberg).

Bavaria, Baden and Württemberg were separate states of southern Germany at the time the plate was published.

The rich mix of headdresses makes the plate a good addition to a collection of German or textile subjects.

This is an original antique print, not a modern reproduction. This item is sold unframed.
