This is an original antique lithograph with hand coloring from the Galleria Universale di Tutti i Popoli del Mondo (Venice, Giuseppe Antonelli, 1842). The upper image shows four young countrywomen on sandy ground: one in a blue head scarf and striped pink and white skirt, one in a red bodice and blue skirt with a basket on her arm, one in a fur cap and green jacket with a red laced front and a white cloth in her hand, and one in a large dark winged headdress, blue neckerchief and striped brown jacket over a flowered white skirt, a basket of fruit at her feet. The lower image shows a woman in a blue headband, black vest, full white sleeves and blue apron, and three hunters in green jackets, feathered hats and white stockings: one carries game slung on his back, one in a red vest leans on a staff with a gun, and one holds a gun across his body. A fir tree and hills stand behind them.
The top margin is lettered "Tav. 70" at the left, "GERMANIA" in the center and "Tom. IV" at the right. The caption under the upper image reads "Costume di vestito Bavarese nei contadi" (Bavarian dress in the countryside). The caption under the lower image reads "Contadina dello Spessart. Cacciatori montani presso il lago di Teger" (peasant woman of the Spessart; mountain hunters near the lake of Teger).
The Spessart is a wooded upland range lying in northern Bavaria and Hesse. The lake of Teger is the Tegernsee in the Bavarian Alps, south of Munich.
Two crowded, brightly colored groups make this a cheerful plate for anyone with ties to Bavaria.
This is an original antique print, not a modern reproduction. This item is sold unframed.
