The Battle Monument in Baltimore, an original antique steel engraving, uncolored, dated 1842 in the imprint. The English caption reads "BATTLE MONUMENT, BALTIMORE.", and it is repeated in French, German and Dutch below.
The monument stands at the center of the square: a tall column bound with bands and crowned by a statue, raised on a high base in the Egyptian manner with griffins at its corners, inside an iron railing hung with chains between posts. A young tree and a tall brick house with dormers fill the right side, where a carriage drawn by two horses waits and a woman and children walk past. At the left a woman sits on the pavement with a basket and melons, two children stand with a bucket by a lamp post in the foreground, and a street lined with houses runs away into the distance.
The plate is lettered "W. H. Bartlett." at lower left and "H. Griffiths." at lower right, with the number "37" below the center of the image. The further captions read MONUMENT GUERRIER, À BALTIMORE., DAS SCHLACHT DENKMAL ZU BALTIMORE. and KRIJGSMONUMENT TE BALTIMORE. The imprint at the foot reads "London, Published for the Proprietors, by Geo: Virtue, 26, Ivy Lane, 1842."
The sheet comes from a dealer's album rather than from a bound set. The plate belongs to the engraved views of North America after drawings by William Henry Bartlett, issued as American Scenery and published by George Virtue at 26 Ivy Lane, London. The Battle Monument commemorates those who died defending Baltimore against the British in September 1814, and it appears on the seal of the city.
Even age toning. Handling soiling along the left edge. A few small foxing spots in the margin. Slight wear at the bottom left corner. Several larger brown marks.
This is an original antique print, not a modern reproduction. This item is sold unframed.
