This is a distant view of Rome, an original antique steel engraving, uncolored, circa 1850. The sheet is captioned in three languages: RÓMA in Hungarian at the left, VUE DE ROME. in French at the center, meaning view of Rome, and ROM in German at the right.
Two umbrella pines rise at the left over a small wayside shrine and a tall gateway with an arched opening and a little bell turret. A tall tree frames the right side against a dark hill. Between them the city lies low and pale across the plain, with the dome of Saint Peter's at the right of the skyline and a river with a boat in front of it. On the road in the foreground a woman carries a jar on her head at the left, and a string of loaded pack animals with their drivers moves toward a man in a tall hat and a woman at the right.
No artist, engraver or publisher is named on the sheet. The roman numeral IV is engraved at the top right.
The sheet comes from a dealer's album rather than from a bound set. The captions in Hungarian, French and German are the only indication of its source, and the sheet names no publisher.
Handling soiling along the right and top edges. A few small foxing spots in the margin. Corners and edges are not shown by this scan. Clean, even paper tone in the margin. Several larger brown marks.
This is an original antique print, not a modern reproduction. This item is sold unframed.
