A distant view of Madrid from the gardens outside the city, an original antique steel engraving, uncolored, circa 1850. The caption beneath the image reads MADRID, the Spanish capital.

The city lies low and pale along the horizon, with domes, towers and spires breaking the line under a wide clouded sky. In the foreground a garden track curves through the beds, where two women ride donkeys at the left with a man walking beside them, below a vine climbing a wall. At the right a well with a wooden frame stands under tall trees, with two women beside it, one seated and one standing, and pitchers on the ground, a wooden cross stands among the plants at the center, and a dog lies on the grass in front.

No artist or engraver is named on the sheet. Below the caption, the imprint at the left reads Aus d. Kunstanst. d. Bibliogr. Instituts in Hildbh. (from the art works of the Bibliographisches Institut in Hildburghausen), and at the right Eigenthum d. Verleger (property of the publishers). The plate number CXI is engraved at the top right, above the image.

The imprint is that of Meyer's Universum, a serial collection of engraved views with descriptive text, published by Joseph Meyer's Bibliographisches Institut at Hildburghausen from 1833, its plates engraved on steel. The sheet comes from a dealer's album rather than from a bound set.

Even age toning. Handling soiling along the bottom and right edges. A few small foxing spots in the margin. All four corners read as present in the scan.

This is an original antique print, not a modern reproduction. This item is sold unframed.
