This is an original antique copper engraved map with original hand coloring, published in 1823 as plate XVII of James Wyld's Geographia Sacra, or Scripture Atlas. The engraved title reads "TRIBE OF SIMEON." The title is engraved in a small rectangular panel washed in yellow near the lower right corner of the map.
The allotment of Simeon is washed in pink and runs from the coast between Askelon and Gaza inland and south to Beer-sheba. The "MEDITERRANEAN or GREAT SEA", also lettered "Sea of the Philistines", fills the upper left, Dan is lettered to the north and Judah to the east. Inside the territory the words "PHILISTINES" and "SOUTH COUNTRY" are spread across the ground, with Ziklag, Hormah and Gerar marked among the towns and Beer-sheba at the southern end. "AMALEKITES" is lettered along the open ground to the southwest. At the lower left an explanation distinguishes royal, Levitical and refuge cities, above a scale of British statute miles, and the lower border is marked "LONGITUDE EAST FROM GREENWICH".
Below the lower border the credit J. Wyld del. is engraved at the left and G. Neele Sculp. at the right, with the imprint between them: "Published by G. & W. B. Whittaker, 13, Ave Maria Lane, April, 1823." The plate number is engraved as XVII. in the upper right.
The atlas was published by G. and W. B. Whittaker in London, and its engraved title page names Wyld as "of the Quarter Master General's Office, Horse Guards". James Wyld the elder (1790 to 1836) was a London geographer and map publisher.
Even age toning. Marked handling soiling along the bottom, right and top edges. Scattered light foxing in the margin. Slight wear at the bottom left corner. Minor edge wear, shallow nicks along the bottom. Several larger brown marks.
This is an original antique map, not a modern reproduction. This item is sold unframed.
