This is an original antique map of the country around Belfast, printed by lithography with original hand coloring and dated 1885 by the atlas it comes from. The title at the upper right reads "THE ENVIRONS OF" over "BELFAST" and "BY EDWD WELLER, F.R.G.S.", with a scale of English Miles and the note "Railways & Stations are shown thus" with the example Ballyclare.
Belfast Lough runs in from the upper right of the sheet, with Carrickfergus, Whitehead and Black Head on its northern shore and Holywood, Bangor and Groomsport on the southern. The town of Belfast lies at its head, near the center of the sheet, drawn in close street detail. To the left Lough Neagh fills the western edge with Antrim, Randalstown and Antrim Bay, and Divis and the hills west of the town are modeled in hachure. The southeast of the sheet, the County Down side, is washed by hand in pale rose. Strangford Lough opens at the lower right with its many small islands, and Newtownards, Comber, Donaghadee, the Copeland Islands, Lisburn and Hillsborough are lettered. Railways run out from Belfast to Antrim, Carrickfergus, Bangor, Donaghadee and Lisburn, and the border is marked in degrees and minutes.
The sheet number at the upper right is cut by the trimmed edge.
It comes from The New Large Scale Ordnance Atlas of the British Isles, published in London by G. W. Bacon and Co., and is dated 1885 by the volume it was taken from; no date is printed on the sheet itself. Edward Weller (1819 to 1884) was a London map engraver and draftsman and a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society.
Vertical fold down the center from binding. Even age toning. A few small foxing spots in the margin. Minor edge wear, a shallow nick along the top at the fold. All four corners are present.
This is an original antique map, not a modern reproduction. This item is sold unframed.
