This is an original antique engraved map, colored by hand, from Fullarton's Companion Atlas to the Gazetteer of the World. The title in the upper left reads "HOLLAND & BELGIUM". The upright sheet covers the Netherlands from the Frisian islands and the Dollart south through Belgium to Luxembourg and the French border around Charleville and Sedan, with the neighboring German lands along the right side and the North Sea at the left. The provinces are outlined in color, and relief in the Ardennes is shown by hachures.
Beneath the title is an engraved table headed "FOREIGN POSSESSIONS BELONGING TO HOLLAND." Under "In the Indian Seas" it lists Amboyna and the other Spice Islands, the Banda Islands, Banca, the Island of Java, and settlements in Borneo, Celebes and Sumatra; under "On the Coast of South America", Dutch Guiana and the Island of Curaçao; and under "In the West Indies", the Island of St. Eustatius and the western part of St. Martins. On the map the "ZUYDER ZEE" is open water, and the "SEA OF HAARLEM" is shown southwest of Amsterdam. "LUXEMBURG" is lettered across the southeast. Two scale bars give "Geographical Miles 60 = One Degree" and "English Miles 69 = One Degree".
Below the title the map is credited "BY G.H. SWANSTON EDINR." The engraver's line below the lower right corner of the border reads "Engd. by G.H. Swanston, Edinburgh.", and the imprint centered below the border reads "A. FULLARTON & Co. EDINBURGH, LONDON & DUBLIN."
The sheet comes from The Companion Atlas to the Gazetteer of the World, published by A. Fullarton and Co. of London, Edinburgh and Dublin and issued to subscribers in parts. The printed wrapper of Part 7, which survives with these maps, bills the work as comprehending forty-three beautifully colored maps engraved by G. H. Swanston, and it is marked "Colored Copy". The Zuyder Zee, lettered here as open water, was closed off from the North Sea by the Afsluitdijk in 1932.
This is an original antique map, not a modern reproduction. This item is sold unframed.
