This original antique lithograph, hand colored, comes from the Galleria Universale di Tutti i Popoli del Mondo (Venice, Giuseppe Antonelli, 1842). The upper image shows at the left a tall dark gray jug with a single high handle and a narrow red brown panel of decoration down its side, with a meander band at the top. Beside it the painting is shown at large scale in pale buff outline: a draped youth in a short cloak rides a walking bull, one arm raised, among looping trails of dotted lines. The lower image shows three vases standing on a ground line. At the left a wide mouthed two handled vessel with a lattice pattern on its neck and a female head in profile on its body; in the center a one handled jar painted with a standing figure, a rosette and leafy ornament; at the right a smaller two handled vessel with a vine panel on its neck and a female head in profile, all in golden brown and dark brown tones.

The lettering reads "Tom. IV" at the top left, "ITALIA" at the center and "Tav. 44" at the top right. The upper caption reads "Vaso e sua pittura" (vase and its painting), and the lower caption reads "Altri Vasi" (other vases).

Painted vases of this kind were excavated in large numbers in Italy, in Etruria and in the south, and were eagerly collected and published in the early nineteenth century. This plate belongs to the part of the volume on Italy, the Etruscans and the Romans.

It suits a study, a library or a collection on classical antiquity and archaeology.
